6th July Kings School, Ottery St. Mary
What a difference a year makes – flooding in Devon on Summer Day in 2012 and a heatwave for our Summer Day this year (as booked by Christine). Lyn Carr stepped in to the breach as our morning speaker and encouraged us to experiment (ie play) with different printing techniques using the ‘stuff’ that we creative people accumulate and showing her GITS (good ideas at the time) making a humorous and enjoyable show and tell. This was followed by our member’s show and tell with lovely work and interesting stories.
The opportunity was taken to award life memberships to three members who have contributed so much over the years to the group – Jean Bartlett for organising the catering, Sandra Scott our secretary and Christine Badger for arranging the stand at the Spring Quilt Show at Westpoint.
We had a separate canteen building for the usual refreshments including home-made cakes and we were able to sit outside for lunch around picnic tables.
There were many bags displayed for the ‘challenge’ although I understand that some were hijacked from people as they came in to the hall! The traders had their own room this year and on display were the blocks that had been returned after the AGM for the poppy quilt (now named “Every stitch a memory” – see Poppy Project article) which will now be finished by Christine and Val Thomas and will be on display at the Christmas Meeting.
Our afternoon speaker Barbara Chainey transported us to Cairo (we even had the heat) and took us on a virtual tour of the street of the tentmakers explaining the history of the craft and showing the extensive collection she has of their exquisite applique pieces which we were able to examine closely at the end of the day.
