Many years ago a Japanese man named Yusai used to come to Exeter each year to teach workshops on Sashiko and to learn all about lace making. So it was a great surprise to be invited to Barbara Janssen’s house on Sunday, October 11th, to meet up with Yusai again and to meet four charming Japanese ladies – Fumiko, Keiko, Shizuko and Youko.

With about 15 quilters around the table – mostly from the Exeter Appliqué group – we were shown four designs for folded flowers and given gifts of Japanese fabrics and a beautiful little flower which was an example of very fine tatting. The very talented visitors showed us beautiful examples of their hand work – using Suffolk Puffs, Ribbon Embroidery, Crazy Patchwork and Tatting to name just a few of the techniques – every item was a joy to behold and it was difficult to realise that every piece had been hand stitched…………..

A delicious shared lunch was followed by a Show and Tell and then more time for chatter and a cream tea. A day of shared talents from across the world. I would like to thank Barbara, our hostess, for a really special day -one to remember not only for the patchwork and the food, but for shared friendship within our fascinating craft.
