The Sunset Trust

The Trust was set up in April 1995 by Audrey Dean and was formed to enable members who normally could not afford classes and workshops to be able to extend their knowledge of patchwork and quilting.

Through the generosity of members it has also been possible to offer a token of support and good wishes to those experiencing physical or personal difficulties.

It is important that this is done discreetly and the responsibility for this rest with a committee of the Sunset Trust which is made up of:-

  • Chairman of South West Quilters
  • Vice Chairman of South West Quilters
  • Treasurer appointed for Sunset Trust
  • A nominated committee member

Currently these people are:-

  • Elaine Buckley
  • Jean Bartlett
  • Juliet Orsler
  • Linda Baldrey

In recent years there have been no calls from members for the educational part of the Trust, so in 2004 it was decided to spend some of the growing fund on offering 5 bursaries to students of textiles at colleges in the 4 counties of the south west. Each student received £150 and we later had excellent presentations by the students, showing us their work and telling us about the beginnings of their new and exciting careers in the textile world.

For the year 2007 we are offering bursaries to members who wish to undertake the training to become a patchwork and quilting judge. So if you have always wondered how judges make their decisions now is the time to find out. Apply in writing to Elaine or Jean.

At our Summer Day and at the Christmas Day we hold a Chinese Raffle and a Bring and Buy stall to replenish the Trust’s funds.

On March 6th 2007 members of South West Quilters were delighted to present cheques to the two students who had given such interesting talks at our Open Day at Tresillian in November. Becca and Vicki are coming to the end of their three year degree course in the textile department at the Combined University of Cornwall at Tremough. The photograph shows the cheques being presented to the girls with their tutor Di Downes in the reception area in front of one of Vicki’s hangings.
