Spring Quilt Show At Westpoint 2011

Congratulations to all the groups who made a banner for the South West Quilters stand at this show. Compared with last year it completely transformed the stand and was a small quilt exhibition in its own right greatly admired by so many visitors to the show. The stand with these banners certainly made a good impression on everyone. Christine Badger

Back to my roots challenge

Winner : Nurturing by Barbara Janssen, Exeter (labelled photo with bold caption below)
When Elaine announced the title of the S.W.Q challenge for 2011, I knew straight away that I had to make a quilt which had been in my mind since visiting Kilglass in County Roscommon two years ago, whilst researching some more information about my family who emigrated from Ireland during the potato famine in 1842.
The day ended with an emotional lakeside find of the sculpture depicted on this quilt of a mother and daughter bird by the artist Michael Casey erected in 1999 as a “memorial to past generations who lived along these shores. It is a symbol of the caring spirit of the people especially in famine times, whose courage helped to bring forth an enduring flame of hope to our land”
